With the weather getting warmer and flowers blooming, it’s time to get out of that stuffy gym and onto outdoor running routes in Philadelphia. Your run will feel shorter and much more enjoyable when outside enjoying the beautiful views Philadelphia has to offer. Whether you are looking for a beautiful city sidewalk or a trail surrounded by nature, these are the most beautiful running routes in Philadelphia.
Schuylkill River Trail
The Schuylkill River Trail stretches from Philadelphia all the way up to Auburn, Pennsylvania. This 130-mile trail currently has 60 miles of completed running routes. If you’re looking to run along the gorgeous Kelly Drive alongside the Schuylkill River, this is the route for you. Pass through Boathouse Row and then head towards the Schuylkill Boardwalk near South Street for a quick view of West Philly.
Ben Franklin Bridge
If you are looking for a big reward from your outdoor run, the Ben Franklin Bridge has what you’re looking for. Cross over state lines into New Jersey in the pedestrian lane on the bridge. Once you reach the end, you’ll have a beautiful view of Philadelphia’s skyline. This running route is most beautiful during either sunrise or sunset.
Spruce Street
While Spruce Street isn’t one of the designated running routes in Philadelphia, it offers great city views. Run from the Schuylkill to the Delaware River and pass through a number of beautiful neighborhoods such as Rittenhouse Square and Society Hill. You can’t beat the view of those old, brick rowhomes.
The Rocky Route
Follow in the footsteps of Philadelphia’s most famous character, Rocky Balboa. Complete his famous 3-mile run starting in the Italian Market at 9th Street and Washington Avenue. Run along 9th Street through the market, then take a left on Spruce Street until you reach 16th Street. Take a right on 16th Street and run until you reach the Art Museum. No Rocky run is complete with a jog up the Art Museum’s steps!
Forbidden Drive
Escape the hustle and bustle of the city for a beautiful run along the Forbidden Drive running route in Wissahickon Valley Park. The route is off limits to cars, so you don’t have to worry about traffic or speedy drivers. You can enjoy running alongside the Wissahickon creek and the greenery surrounding this running route.
