Meet Sylvester Mobley, Founder and President of Coded by Kids
Agent Lady: In regards to Coded by Kids, when people ask that famous question “what do you do”, how do you typically answer?
Sylvester: When asked what I do, I typically say that I work for a nonprofit that teaches programming to kids.
Agent Lady: What does Coded by Kids do, what neighborhood(s) does it provide products/services in, and what do you find special about those Philly areas?
Sylvester: Coded by Kids provides children who come from underserved communities and groups that are underrepresented in tech with access to programming and software engineering focused education programs. We currently run programs in almost every neighborhood in the city, including Hunting Park, Fishtown, Graduate Hospital, Southwest Philadelphia and Fairmount. Every neighborhood in Philadelphia is unique and has its own character, which is one of the best things about Philadelphia.
Agent Lady: How do you believe Coded by Kids is making Philadelphia better?
Sylvester: We are making Philadelphia better by providing underserved and underrepresented children with access to high quality tech education programs.
Agent Lady: If you had to choose between a Philly cheesesteak or a Philly pretzel, what would you choose?
Sylvester: I hate pretzels and love cheesesteaks, so it would be cheesesteaks.
Agent Lady: What’s the biggest misconception people have about your industry or type of organization?
Sylvester: I think people who aren’t in tech just don’t understand tech in general. 6.
Agent Lady: What is the nerdiest thing you do in your spare time?
Sylvester: I’m a programmer, so most of my spare time is spent programming, which is as nerdy as it gets.
Agent Lady: What is your favorite word?
Sylvester: Ecosystem
Agent Lady: If you had to pick another career what would it be?
Sylvester: Art museum curator
Agent Lady: For anyone looking to buy their first home in Philly or move to the Philly area, what do you have to say to them?
Sylvester: Look for something with character and look in Mt. Airy
