It was a historic day for the Philadelphia Eagles on February 4, 2018. Millions of people sat, glued to a television screen as they watched the Eagles win their very first Super Bowl game.
For those who aren’t familiar with Philadelphia sports, this is a major event for the city. Die-hard Eagles fans never thought they would live to see the day the Lombardi Trophy was paraded through Philly’s streets. Until now!
The Super Bowl
Two weeks leading up to the Super Bowl was an exciting and tense time for Philadelphia. The last time the Eagles went to the Super Bowl was in 2004. That’s 14 years ago! You could see green jerseys everywhere you looked.
The night of the game, people cheered with their friends. Bars were full that night. Every window you peered into had the game playing. Some people never thought the Eagles would beat the Patriots, who have won five Super Bowls already.
It was a close game at times, but the Eagles always were a point or two ahead. Until Eagles quarterback, Nick Foles, decided to do what they call, the “Philly Special.” This was the play that put the Eagles in the lead to win the game.
The Celebration
Now, Philadelphia sports fans get a bad rap for their love and passion for their teams. They’re said to be violent and rude to other teams. This may be true of certain fans, but the night the Eagles won the Super Bowl was a night of excitement and unity.
Thousands of people poured into Center City after the win to celebrate. Trash trucks were used as barricades to keep cars from driving down Broad Street. A heavy police presence made sure everyone was safe. Fans cheered, hugged, drank, and some climbed the previously greased light poles.
Sadly, there was some destruction caused by the excitement and national media made Philadelphia look barbaric. As a matter of fact, people who participated never felt to be in danger. Everything done was purely out of excitement.
The Championship Parade
To commemorate the Eagles win, Philadelphia organized a parade a few days after the win. The team’s players stood atop of double decker tour buses and rode from Pattison to the Art Museum. There is some discrepancy as to how many people came to the parade, but right now there was an estimated 700,000.
Philly businesses were closed, the Regional Rail took on a new schedule, and some public transportation was delayed. Confetti flew through the sky as did skywriting saying, “Philly Philly Dilly Dilly,” which references the hilarious Bud Light commercial.
A Day of Unity
It was a day of unity for Philadelphia. It was a special thing to see such a diverse city come together to celebrate something. Excitement leaked through the streets. It really made some people appreciate living in Philadelphia. Sometimes the greatness of a city and its citizens isn’t obvious until something like this happens.
