Fishtown Philadelphia
Fishtown neighborhood’s edges are getting blurry with old residents leaving and new ones arriving, but it typically covers a triangular area northeast of center Philly. The Delaware River, Frankford Avenue and York Street seem to be the actual neighborhood perimeters, although new residents (and realtors) have tried to extend the lines past York St.

Fishtown Philadelphia History
Do you know why Fishtown was named as such? In the 18th and 19th centuries the first German and German-American families who moved to the area established it a center for Shad fishing on the Delaware river. In fact, the residents purchased the “rights” to fishing on both sides of the Delaware river from Trenton Falls to Cape May, New Jersey. It is also rumored that the largest Shad ever caught was right here is Fishtown! The scuttlebutt about Charles Dickens naming the area is just a tale, as it was already named that before Dickens visited in 1842.
Fishtown has always been home to the working class, with residents mostly from the ethnic backgrounds of Swedish, British, German and Polish. Today, the residents are made up of mostly artists, educators, police and fire fighting employees, medical occupations and building trades. A lot of new construction projects have been the cause of rising home values, and upscale art, entertainment and dining establishments are cropping up.
