Our pets are a part of the family, so when it comes to moving, we want to make the transition as easy as possible for them. Moving in general can be chaotic and overwhelming. Moving with pets can just add unnecessary stress. So, to keep your move organized and calm, here are some ways to make moving with pets easy and seamless.
Find a Pet Friendly Space
Before the big move, make sure that your new home is pet friendly. Whether you are renting or buying a condo with HOA rules, it’s important to make sure that your pet is allowed to live with you in your home. This may depend on the breed and size of your pet as well.
You will also want to make sure that your new home is a good space for your pet. Depending on the type of pet you have and their size, your new space may or may not be appropriate and comfortable for your pet.
Pack a Pet Bag
When it comes to moving with pets, you’ll want to pack an overnight bag for your pet. This bag should consist of your pet’s food for at least two days so you don’t have to rummage through all of your boxes trying to find it. You should also pack their favorite toys, food dishes, and their bed. Having all of these items packed separately will make them easier to find when you need them.
Separate Your Pet on Moving Day
There will be a lot of people coming in and out of your house on moving day. To keep your pet from becoming overwhelmed or running out the door, separate them from the action. This could mean putting them in a kennel for the day or asking a friend to take them. If you want your pet to be in the house, clear out a room with a door that won’t be opened much so your pet can relax and stay put until it’s time to leave.
Take Your Pet With You
While on your way to your new home, transport your pet with you. They may be confused about what is happening, so it will be comforting to be near you during this transition. Keep them in their crate or on a leash, though. You do not want to let them roam free in your new neighborhood because they may get scared and run away.
Set Up Your Pet’s Space
One of the first things you should do when you arrive in your new home is set up a space for your pet. Put out their food dishes, bed, and some toys from the pet bag to make them feel at home. These familiar items will help them adjust to their new surroundings quickly.
Update Records
There is a lot of paperwork and things that need to be done when moving with pets. This includes informing your vet that you are moving so they can update your address. If you are moving out of the area, ask your vet for a recommendation in your new town.
Don’t forget to update your pet’s tags if they have them too. This is extremely important because being in a new area increases the chance that your pet may run away or wander off from home.
Make Moving with Pets Easy
Moving with pets doesn’t have to be difficult. While it may be an added stress to moving in general, it’s important to keep your pet calm and help them to adjust to their new surroundings. With these tips, your pet will feel at home in no time.
