“Living in Philly” interview series where realtor Cherise Wynne (“Agent Lady”) highlights interesting people & organizations in the civic, real estate, restaurant and lifestyle space that help first time home buyers navigate our great city of Philadelphia.
Meet Candace Johnson, Writer at Good Day Philadelphia Weekend
Agent Lady: In regards to Good Day Philadelphia Weekend, when people ask that famous question “what do you do”, how do you typically answer?
Candace: I’ll be honest, it depends on my mood. If I don’t feel like chatting I say “I’m a writer specializing in current events.” This answer works because most people don’t know what to ask next so they just move on. However when I feel like sharing I say “I’m a morning show news producer,” and when they realize I’m with Fox the conversation tends to focus on Mike, Alex, Lauren, Quincy (my on-air co-workers). In short, people rarely care to understand exactly what I do, just who I know, and I get it, I have a very cool job.
Agent Lady: What does Good Day Philadelphia Weekend do, what neighborhood(s) does it provide products/services in, and what do you find special about those Philly areas?
Candace: Good Day airs throughout the tri-state area so we focus less on neighborhoods and more on what’s happening all over the Delaware Valley, deserving of attention. The goal is to empower viewers with information that affects them immediately and in the long term that includes local, national and international reports.
Agent Lady: How do you believe Good Day Philadelphia Weekend is making Philadelphia better?
Candace: The above answer is how we make our city better. Information is a powerful weapon and we deliver ours mixed with a little lighthearted comedy to keep our viewers (hopefully) entertained.
Agent Lady: If you had to choose between a Philly cheesesteak or a Philly pretzel, what would you choose?
Candace: CHEESESTEAK, no contest! Kind of an offensive question. 🙂
Agent Lady: What’s the biggest misconception people have about your industry or type of organization?
Candace: Most people assume Fox29 Philadelphia is Fox News, which is not true. We are two separate networks owned by the same company. Aside from that, I occasionally have people (who don’t work in the field) tell me how all news is bias and we get paid to lie to our communities. I have no problem debating with someone open-minded but I also have no problem allowing someone to stand with that false belief if they aren’t interested in learning fact versus conspiracy theory.
Agent Lady: What is the nerdiest thing you do in your spare time?
Candace: I would like to think I’m really cool, though my friends my say otherwise. I suppose the nerdiest thing would be that I never stop working. Often times a simple conversation, joke or question may end up as a chat or segment on the show.
Agent Lady: What is your favorite word?
Candace: Probably “FUCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!” I would really like to stop cursing but anyone who works in live TV will tell you that’s an impossibility.
Agent Lady: If you had to pick another career what would it be?
Candace: I really love my job so if I had to do something else, it would be something that would help other TV producers. I would be a media consultant. There are way too many potential guests who are not properly coached for TV. They are fine until the segment starts then they lose their spirit. I would train people on how to be a star in front of the camera.
Agent Lady: For anyone looking to buy their first home in Philly or move to the Philly area, what do you have to say to them?
Candace: I have lived quite a few places because of my job. My advice for anyone moving to this new place is to truly explore all the different areas of Philly. While you can grab a drink and a fabulous meal anywhere in the city, there are such different energies neighborhood to neighborhood. Old City is nothing like North Liberties, which is nothing like East Passyunk, which is nothing like University City. Its important to find where you fit in.
Agent Lady: If someone wanted to learn more about you or Good Day Philadelphia Weekend, where could they go?
Candace: Watching the show is a great way to know about the show lol. We have the best anchors; they are open, inviting, honest and not afraid to have a good time. I think it’s one of the most entertaining show on local TV.
