Francisville, one of the many transitioning neighborhoods in Philadelphia, is nestled in the area between Fairmount Avenue to the south, Girard Avenue to the north, Broad Street to the east, and Corinthian Avenue to the west. Before 1839, when the earliest records of Francisville are documented, the area was just referred to as “The Vineyard,” after a failed attempt by William Penn to develop what he called “Springettsbury Manor.” Penn wanted the area to be his own personal vineyard, but unfortunately his plants all died by 1699. A unique feature of Francisville is the opposite to normal street grid and naming conventions; the streets run east to west instead of north to south.
Today, with major revitalization efforts hitting Philadelphia pretty hard, the emergence of the Francisville Neighborhood Development Corporation (FNDC) has a mission: “to improve the quality of life in the Francisville community through commercial and residential development and to implement programs designed to develop the youth, the senior citizens, and generally invest in the people of Francisville.” The FNDC intends to be a resource for information and communication, a support system and a connection with residents and business owners to insure they have a part in the revitalization.
