East Falls
Location
The East Falls neighborhood sits northwest of Philadelphia’s Center City and just south of Manayunk. Its boundaries are from the Schuylkill River east to Wissahickon Avenue and from Lincoln Drive south to Route 1 or Roosevelt Boulevard.
History
Originally, the Lenni Lenape Native American tribe lived in the area we now call East Falls. They used the Schuylkill River to fish and travel throughout the area. In fact, European settlers followed the Schuylkill River to the area and decided to pave Lenape paths to what are now Ridge Avenue and Germantown Avenue.
The neighborhood really started blossoming when Fort St. David was built in 1732. This was used as a fishery. The Schuylkill River played a large part in the formation of East Falls as fishermen were able to retrieve food and mills were built for factories to create glass, cotton, and other textiles. Plenty of inns lined the river and served a beloved dish, catfish and waffles, during the 18th and 19th centuries. In the early 20th century, some breweries also popped up in the neighborhood.
East Falls was named after the waterfalls present before the construction of the Fairmount Dam in 1822. Unfortunately, they no longer exist due to the higher water levels caused by the dam.
A prominent figure of East Falls is the former Princess of Monaco and Hollywood starlet, Grace Kelly. In fact, you can visit the childhood home of Grace Kelly after its recent restoration.
Atmosphere
Similar to Manayunk, East Falls has a small town feel to it, even though it is a short ride away from Philadelphia’s busy Center City. Residents can choose to live in row homes or detached homes, mostly with some type of parking available. It’s a relatively quiet neighborhood considering it is located in a major American city.
There is still plenty to do in this residential neighborhood, though. Bars and restaurants are scattered throughout the area. Some neighborhood favorites are In Riva and Fiorino.
Residents who enjoy some greenery and being in nature will take advantage of the many hiking trails around East Falls. One of the most notable trails is the Wissahickon Trail, perfect for a Sunday afternoon stroll or an all-day hike.
Highlights and Events
East Falls has plenty of activities to offer its residents and visitors. If you don’t take advantage of its nature with hiking trails or boating, then you can enjoy weekend events such as flea markets. The community always has some kind of event happening.
