Passyunk
Location
South Philadelphia neighborhood of East Passyunk’s boundaries can be interpreted a few different ways. The most accurate boundaries that describe the neighborhood are from Tasker street south to Snyder street and from Broad street east to 6th street. It is within these boundaries that the famous Passyunk Avenue runs diagonally.
History
The name Passyunk (pronounced Pa-sh-yunk by locals) comes from the Native American Lenape tribe’s word Pachsegink, which means “place between the hills” or “in the valley.” In fact, the diagonal Passyunk Avenue was formerly a Lenape trail.
Before becoming part of the city of Philadelphia, the area was known as Passyunk Township in the 1800s. It later became one of South Philly’s most well known neighborhoods.
Passyunk Avenue is home to many small businesses and independent restaurants. It started out as high-end and boutique shopping and continued to grow.
The neighborhood is also very close to the historic Italian Market, where you can find the birthplace of the cheesesteak.
Atmosphere
Passyunk is a family-friendly, quiet neighborhood in South Philadelphia. Two- and three-story row homes line one-way streets. Most of these homes have been there for several years, so new construction is rare to find in the neighborhood.
Along Passyunk Avenue you can find various dining options, bars, ice cream and gelato shops, boutique stores, and salons. Wander off of the Avenue and you may stumble upon a small coffee shop or delicious restaurant.
Highlights and Events
There is always something to do in this neighborhood. During the spring, usually towards the end of April, Flavors on the Avenue is held along Passyunk Avenue. Here you can taste small bites from the Avenue’s restaurants and browse local crafters and vendors.
Another annual street festival is the Passyunk Car Show, which takes place in the summer, usually in July. Sip on drinks and enjoy small bites as you admire old fashioned and classic cars parked along the Avenue.
One of the most famous staples in the neighborhood is the singing fountain. Located right on Tasker street, you can sit on benches and enjoy music as you watch the calm fountain.
